Adhering to the philosophy of “being oriented towards national needs, focusing on technological frontiers and practical applications for talent cultivation”, the School of Safety Science aims at the forefront of global safety science and technology, researches theories and methods of safety science, emergency technology, and system equipment. The school is dedicated to building a comprehensive and open platform for safety research, constructing a theoretical system, a technological innovation system, and an academic discipline system of safety science.

The school is the convenor of the first discipline evaluation group for the major disciplines of “Safety Science and Engineering”in China. It is also the chairman and secretariat of the national engineering master’s education collaborative group in the field of safety engineering, the founding chairman and secretariat of the “China Association for Public Safety”, a national first-tier academic association, and the chairman of the “Asia-Pacific Association for Public Safety”.

The school leads a number of major and key projects supported by the National Key R&D Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), and the Major Research Plan of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has played a significant role in the formulation of national plans and programs, such as the Major Research Plan of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology’s technology plans and key special projects of public safety science during the 12th, 13th, and 14th Five-Year Plans, and the establishment of safety disciplines by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. Its achievements have won the First and Second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, as well as multiple science and technology awards from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Security, Beijing Municipality, Anhui Province, and so on.

The establishment and development of the School of Safety Science have received strong support from national ministries and local governments such as the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Health Commission, the Ministry of Emergency Management, Beijing Municipality, and Anhui Province. The school houses various research institutions, such as the “Public Safety and Emergency Management Engineering Research Center” established by the Ministry of Education, the “National Health Emergency Platform System Construction Cooperation Base” by the National Health Commission, the “Key Laboratory of Urban Comprehensive Emergency Science” of Beijing and the “Key Laboratory of Disaster Environment and Personnel Safety” of Anhui. It also hosts the “Urban Safety Major Accident Prevention Technology Support Base” by the Ministry of Emergency Management and the “Mega-disaster Scientific Center” at the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center.

The school has established good cooperative relationships with international renowned academic institutions, including Harvard University, the University of Washington, the State University of New York in the United States, the University of Tokyo, Tohoku University in Japan, the University of Cambridge, University College London, Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, the University of Melbourne in Australia, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and the City University of Hong Kong, and so on.
